Who We Are

Sanlam FOUR¹ is a boutique asset manager, founded in 2006 and currently manages £5bn². Our focus is on surpassing clients’ expectations for investment objectives, operational efficiency and service.

Our teams consist of high calibre investment professionals with proven experience in their respective fields. We align our teams’ interests with those of our clients through direct equity ownership in their own business. The investment teams at Sanlam FOUR are passionate about how they invest to best achieve clients’ objectives. For this reason, they execute their investment philosophies and processes autonomously.

To support the work of our investment professionals, we have outstanding operations people and systems, and have a Client Service function that strives to stand out against our peers. This ensures that fund managers can focus on delivering their investment proposition.

We are majority owned by the Sanlam Group which is a substantial financial services company with a £9bn market capitalisation that is Standard and Poor’s A rated³. Sanlam FOUR is the Group’s international Centre of Excellence for asset management.

Alfio Tagliabue

Alfio Tagliabue

Chief Executive Officer

Alfio is Sanlam FOUR’s Chief Executive Officer. He joined Sanlam in January 2016 as Chief Financial Officer. His previous roles have included Group Chief Financial Officer at Ashcourt Rowan, 12 years as a Board level consultant to the asset and wealth management industry and Engagement Director at Mars & Co after starting his career in 1992 with Frost & Sullivan, a sector analysis consultancy. He is an Italian national with a degree in accounting, economics and business administration from Bocconi University in Milan.

Tom Carroll

Founder and Investment Director

Tom Carroll is Investment Director and a Founding Partner. Prior to co-founding the company, he was with Schroder Investment Management Limited since April 2000. He was a member of the Specialist UK Equity Team, running high performance mandates and was an Executive Director, with direct responsibility for managing over £2 billion in retail and institutional assets. Previously, Tom was a UK equity fund manager at M&G, which he joined in 1993. While there, he was part of a small team which established and built a Pension Fund business catering for clients with high return expectations. Tom qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers & Lybrand (now Price Waterhouse Coopers) in London. In his time there, he worked in Corporate Finance and the financial services division. Tom also has a Business Degree and is qualified as an associate of the UK Society of Investment Professionals.

Within Sanlam FOUR and its subsidiary Sanlam International Investments (SIIL) Justin is Head: Fund Solutions. He joined the Sanlam Group in January 2001. Since 2009 Justin has worked for SIIL on a number of Sanlam Asset Management (Ireland) (SAMI) funds to which SIIL has been appointed. Justin's role involves the day-to-day management and monitoring of certain of SAMI’s funds, and the successful execution of SIIL’s investment strategy. Justin’s role includes making investment decisions relating to asset allocation, investment manager allocation and managing day-to-day cash flows. Justin is also heavily involved in decisions related to investment manager appointments and terminations, and the subsequent implementation of restructurings of the relevant SAMI fund(s). Justin is a senior member of the SIIL investment team.

Prior to the end of 2008 Justin worked for Sanlam Multi-Manager International (SMMI) in London and was responsible for a range of both global and regional equity and fixed income funds. His principal area of expertise within the investment team centered on the fundamental investment manager research and fund construction processes. His primary responsibilities were monitoring and managing SAMI’s Global Equity, UK Equity and historically SAMI's Global Bond Fund. Prior to working at SMMI, Justin studied at Durham University where he completed a B.A. (Hons.) in Economics and a M.Sc. in Finance. Justin is a CFA charterholder, a member of CFA Institute and a member of the CFA Society of the UK. He also holds the Investment Management Certificate qualification.

JJonathan Polin

Non-executive Director

Jonathan is the Group’s Chief Executive Officer. Since leaving the army, he has spent 26 years working with the Prudential, Aberdeen Asset Management, Britannic & most recently, Ashcourt Rowan where he oversaw its rejuvenation and sale in 2015. He became CEO of the Sanlam UK Group in January 2016 with a clear brief to create a unified, integrated financial services business recognised for the quality of its advice, asset & discretionary fund management services. He believes passionately in the value of both financial planning and wealth management and his vision is to become the market leader in this country.

Jeremy Gibson

Jeremy Gibson

Non-executive Director

Jeremy joined Sanlam in September 2012 and was subsequently appointed to the boards of Sanlam UK, Sanlam Investments and Pensions and Sanlam Private Wealth as Finance Director. He is also a non-executive director of Nucleus Financial Group, where he is chairman of the audit committee. He qualified as a chartered accountant in South Africa and has worked in a broad range of financial services organisations including stockbroking, investment banking, mortgage lending, advisory services and Life and Pensions in London and Sydney before settling in Bristol with his wife and daughters in 2008. He strongly believes in the future of a vertically integrated financial services and is committed to drive through our strategic opportunities to make Sanlam a leading player in this space in the UK.

Valerie Evans

Valerie Evans

Head of Operations

Valerie Evans is Head of Operations at Sanlam FOUR.

Prior to joining, she was Manager, Investment Operations for Integrated Alternative Investments. There, Valerie was responsible for fund structures, administration and performance analysis. She was also responsible for maintaining relationships with custodians, leverage providers and third party administrators.

Previously, Valerie was employed by UBS as an equity trader on large and small cap equities for all major and emerging markets. Prior to this, she was Assistant Manager, Fund Operations and Equity Trading at Quaestor. Valerie began her career with Lloyds where she held a number of administrative positions over a nine year period. Valerie holds the UKSIP Investment Management Certificate.

Carl Fischer

Head of Finance

Prior to Sanlam FOUR, Carl was an investment operations analyst for Sanlam International Investments (“SII”). At SII Carl‘s responsibilities included group financial reporting, investment operations, fund management and compliance.

Prior to joining SII Carl was Head of Finance of CCL Label South Africa, the South African subsidiary of a global speciality packaging company CCL Industries Inc. Carl began his career at Tenk Loubser and Associates, an audit firm in Cape Town.

Carl is a Chartered Accountant registered with the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants.

Carole Costello

Carole Costello

Head of Consultant Relations

Carole Costello is Head of Consultant Relations at Sanlam FOUR, responsible for developing and managing relationships with Institutional consultants. Prior to joining in September 2015, she was responsible for leading Consultant Relations at Vanguard, Aviva Investors and AIG Investments. Carole started her career at Barclays Global Investors where she worked in a number of roles across Operations, Capital Markets and European Institutional Business. Carole gained a BA (Hons) In English Language and Literature from the University of Surrey and holds the Investment Management Certificate.

Liz Adnitt

Liz Adnitt

Sales Director

Liz Adnitt is Sales Director at Sanlam FOUR, responsible for promoting funds to discretionary wealth managers, multi managers, private client advisers and family offices. Prior to joining in November 2015, she was Head of UK Discretionary Sales at Nordea. Previously, she held senior sales positions at L&G Investments, SVM Asset management and Jupiter Asset Management. Liz started her career as an analyst at JP Morgan Asset Management. She holds a BSc Mathematics (Hons) from Royal Holloway, University of London.

Ricky Hoad

Client Reporting Associate

Ricky Hoad is the firm’s Client Reporting Associate, and prior to joining the company has worked in Client Reporting and Performance roles with both Morgan Stanley Investment Management and State Street. Before this he has worked for Baring Asset Management and Northern Trust within the Fund Administration team. He holds both the Investment Operations and Investment Management Certificates.

Marketing Associate

Adrian Daniel is Marketing Associate at Sanlam FOUR. Prior to joining in September 2016, he was a Marketing Associate at J.P. Morgan Asset Management. Previously, he held marketing roles at Cazenove Capital Management, Old Mutual Global Investors and M&G Investments. Adrian started his career at AIG Life as a Marketing Assistant. He holds a BA (Hons) in English Literature from the University of Westminster.

Jarek Rys

Jarek Rys

Head of Compliance

Jarek joined Sanlam FOUR in July 2017 as Head of Compliance. Prior to joining Sanlam FOUR, Jarek was a Compliance and Financial Crime Manager at Liontrust Asset Management PLC. Jarek holds a Master of Laws degree from the University of Poznan, the ICA Diploma in Compliance and the ACOI Professional Certificate in Compliance. He is also a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS).

James Knowles

James Knowles

Performance Analyst

James is the performance analyst at Sanlam FOUR.

He is responsible for all performance calculations relating to a variety of Sanlam Funds. In addition, he covers the performance reporting for all the Accel, P2 and Intrinsic models. James also has responsibility for performance attribution which is primarily equity focused. A significant part of James role is taken up with month end reporting. This involves not only performance and attribution mentioned above but also generating the raw data to populate factsheets and customised reports. James also has some involvement with system design as used by the rest of the Fund Solutions team.

Before joining Sanlam International Investments in April 2011, James worked for Russell Investments focusing on performance measurement, attribution and risk. Prior to this, James was the performance analyst at Sanlam Multi-Manager International. James attended Keele University studying Business Studies and French. James holds the ASIP qualification as well as the Investment Management Certificate (IMC).

Carl Fischer

Head of Finance

Prior to Sanlam FOUR, Carl was an investment operations analyst for Sanlam International Investments (“SII”). At SII Carl‘s responsibilities included group financial reporting, investment operations, fund management and compliance.

Prior to joining SII Carl was Head of Finance of CCL Label South Africa, the South African subsidiary of a global speciality packaging company CCL Industries Inc. Carl began his career at Tenk Loubser and Associates, an audit firm in Cape Town.

Compliance Manager

Nora works in the firm’s Compliance team. Prior to joining FOUR, Nora worked at AIS Fund Administration as an Associate. Nora holds a Masters degree in Finance from the University of Linköping and the UKSIP Investment Management Certificate.

Sarah Wilson

Operations Manager

Sarah works in Fund Operations for the firm. Prior to joining Sanlam FOUR, Sarah worked at Blackrock as a Settlements Associate. Previously Sarah has worked with TCI hedge fund as an Operations Specialist, and at Schroder Investment Management Limited in the fund accountancy department.

Fund Operations Assistant

Karmen works in Fund Operations for the firm. Prior to joining Sanlam FOUR, Karmen worked at AllianceBernstein Investment Management as a Finance / Administrative Assistant. Previously Karmen worked at Meridian Global Services as a VAT Auditor. Karmen holds a BA in Protection and Management of Natural Resources from the Estonia University of Life Science.

Phil McGuire

Fund Operations

Prior to joining Sanlam FOUR in early 2015, Phil worked for BlackRock for 6 years covering various middle and back office functions ranging from equity settlements through to derivative operations where he was team leader in over the counter (OTC) products. He started his professional career with Morgan Stanley as an settlements analyst in 2007. Phil has also gained a BA Degree in Risk Management from Glasgow University.

Fund Operations

Prior to joining Sanlam FOUR, Mazil worked at Man Investments Ltd for 2 years as a hedge fund operation analyst. Previously Mazil has worked at JP Morgan as a Credit Derivatives assistant and Barclays Capital within project management. Mazil holds a BSc (Hons.) in Mathematics and Finance from City University London.

Gemma Henson

Gemma Henson

Team Assistant/Receptionist

Gemma is the firm’s Team Assistant/Receptionist and assists with the running of the office. Gemma holds an NVQ in Hairdressing, and has qualified Carer certificates from Romford, Essex. Prior to working at Sanlam FOUR, Gemma was working for British Telecom, ERS Insurance, and Belluzzo & Partners Tax Accountants as a Facilities Administrator/Receptionist.

Indra Grybaite

Indra Grybaite

Receptionist/Team Assistant

Indra Grybaite is the firm's Receptionist, Team Assistant and Office Manager. Indra has a BA in Business Administration from Vytautas Magnus University. Prior to working at Sanlam FOUR, Indra worked at SEB Bank (bank of Sweden) as a financial adviser and then spent 3.5 years working at Harrods as a Sales Associate.
